Madden 18 wins the month, obviously.

The NPD Group today released its report for August 2017, covering both hardware and software. The Nintendo Switch outsold the PS4 and Xbox One during the month, and in terms of game sales, EA's sports game Madden NFL 18 was the top-selling game of the month. No surprises there. But what is a little more surprising is that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V continues to be a giant--coming in at No. 2 this month--almost four years after release.

Top Selling Games Of All Time List

FIFA 12 sold at least 2 million more copies for PS3 than Xbox and Xbox has none in the top 10? Well that's surprising. Boards Community Central The Vestibule BEST-SELLING EA SPORTS GAMES. Video games are a thriving industry today due to consumers and how much they spend on games. Some games sell more than others, as there are a few series that have pushed themselves to the top of the charts by selling more units and banking more than any other franchise.

Top 10 Best Selling Ea Games

Rounding out the top five best-selling games of August 2017 in the US were Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Splatoon 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

For GTA V, the NPD Group mentioned that the game has been in the Top 10 chart for 41 of the 49 months it's been available. That's 16 times more than any other game that the NPD Group has ever tracked. The group also noted that GTA V is the 'all-time best-selling game by both revenue and units in tracked sales across PC, console, and portable with digital and packaged combined.'

Another notable takeaway from this month's report is that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy's sales only count sales of the standalone game. Excluded are sales of the game from the Uncharted 4 Digital Deluxe edition or through the Explorer's Pack.

Other trends that the NPD Group called out for August 2017 included:

  • Racing game sales grew by more than 80 percent in 2017 year-to-date, fueled principally by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch and Forza Horizon 3 for Xbox One.
  • The shooter category saw sales fall 30 percent so far in 2017, but the NPD Group noted that the same period saw a record high, so it was always going to be a tough comparison.
  • Though shooter sales are down so far this year, the shooter category's sales this year are the third highest ever, only behind the same periods in 2013 and 2017.

In all, game sales in the US--for console and PC--totalled $282 million for August 2017. That's down 3 percent compared to the same month last year. On a year-to-date basis, software sales in the US stand at $2.9 billion, down less than 1 percent year-over-year.

With hardware and software combined, total video game sales for August 2017 came to $568 million, a figure that also includes accessory sales, which rose compared to last year. That's down 2 percent year-over-year.

Sony has revealed the list of best-selling games on the PlayStation Store for February 2018. While last month saw the release of a couple of highly anticipated titles, including Shadow of the Colossus and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the sales charts were once again dominated by Monster Hunter World.

Capcom's online action-RPG was the best-selling PS4 game on the US PlayStation Store for the second month in a row. Bluepoint's Shadow of the Colossus remake debuted at No. 3, while Kingdom Come landed at No. 9. The rest of the top ten was generally comprised of sports games, notably NBA Live 18, FIFA 18, Madden NFL 18, and EA Sports UFC 3, but Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege came in at No. 7, while Dragon Ball FighterZ and Gang Beasts landed at No. 8 and No. 10, respectively.

Across the pond, FIFA 18 edged out Monster Hunter World to be crowned February's best-selling PSN game in Europe, with the ridiculous beat-'em-up Gang Beasts following at No. 3. The perennially popular Grand Theft Auto V and Shadow of the Colossus rounded out the top five, while Kingdom Come debuted at No. 6.

Once again, in lieu of the month's best-selling DLC, Sony has shared a list of the most-downloaded free-to-play on the PlayStation Store, and it was, unsurprisingly, topped by Fortnite: Battle Royale, Epic's incredibly popular PUBG-style shooter. Following at No. 2 and No. 3 were Brawlhalla and Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 Lite, respectively, while Warframe and Paladins rounded out the top five.

Another of February's releases, the adorable Moss, was the No. 7 best-selling PSVR game in the US, while the Secret of Mana remake was the No. 1 Vita release. You can see the top 10 most downloaded PS4 and free-to-play games for February 2018 below. For a full look at the month's best-selling titles, check out the US and European PlayStation Blogs.
