Robert Kelly Slater (born February 11, 1972) is an American professional surfer, author, actor, model, environmental activist, businessman, and innovator, best known for his unprecedented 11 world surfing championships. ^[2][3] He is widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time. ^[4][5]

Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer is a twin position, known to all fans driving on dekorolce, playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, prepared by the same duo, which in the case THPS4, ie. Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer is an extreme sports video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision under the Activision O2 label. The game is endorsed by veteran surfer Kelly Slater and released for Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002, and for Mobile and Microsoft Windows in 2003. To coincide with the game, Slater appeared as an unlockable character in the 2001 video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, complete with surfboard. Early years and personal life[edit]

Slater grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he still resides. He is the son of Judy Moriarity and Stephen Slater.^[6] He has two brothers, Sean and Stephen, and a daughter, Taylor, born in 1996.^[7]

The son of a bait-store proprietor, Slater grew up near the water, and he began surfing at age five. By age 10 he was winning age-division events up and down the Atlantic coast, and in 1984 he won his first age-division United States championship title. Two years later he finished third in the junior division at the world amateur championships in England, and he won the Pacific Cup junior championship in Australia the following year.^[2]

After turning professional in 1990, Slater struggled during his first two years on the professional tour, finishing 90th and 43rd in the world rankings those years. In 1992 he secured podium (top-three) finishes in three of his first five events before winning his first professional tour event, the Rip Curl Pro, in France. His win in that year’s prestigious Pipeline Masters in Hawaii secured his first world title, and at age 20 he became the youngest surfing world champion ever. Slater finished sixth in the 1993 rankings but came back in 1994 to win the world tour during 1994-1998. He then took a break from competitive surfing at the end of 1998.^[2]

Accomplishments[edit]

Surfing[edit]

Slater, having grown up in Florida, was never truly comfortable in waves of consequence until a trip to Oahu in 1987. A giant Northwest swell was pounding the coast, closing out breaks from Waimea to Sunset. He drove to Makaha, where he was greeted with 40' (Hawaiian scale) waves breaking across the bay. Slater parked and saw legendary charger Brandon 'Big Wave' Davis waxing up his 11' gun. Big Wave Davis simply gave Slater a wink and they paddled out, trading waves all afternoon. Slater credits Davis in his biography stating 'Brandon's knowledge and poise in large surf had a huge impact on my career. Anytime I'm dropping in a big wave, I think back to that wink in the Makaha parking lot and I push myself over the ledge.'^[8][9]

Some of his favorite surf spots include Mondos in Ventura, California, Pipeline in Hawaii, Kirra in Australia, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, Minis in Ireland, Taghazout in Morocco, Veiny's in New Zealand, Soup Bowls in Barbados, and Sebastian Inlet near his home in Florida. .^[10]

He is an avid golfer and practices the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.^[11]

Slater's surfing inspirations are said to be Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, Josh Kerr, and Dane Reynolds.^[12]

Slater also loves spending time with his lifelong friend Derek 'shorebreak' Johnson, of Delray Beach notoriety. ^[13]

Musical Appearances & Collaborations[edit]

Slater plays guitar and ukulele, and has performed with Jack Johnson and Angus Stone.^[14][15] Kelly Slater joined Rob Machado and Peter King in a band called The Surfers.^[7]

Slater performed a song with Ben Harper during Harper's concert in Santa Barbara on August 1, 2006. He also performed Rockin' in the Free World with grunge band Pearl Jam on July 7, 2006 in San Diego.

In 1999, he appeared alongside Garbage singer Shirley Manson in the promotional video for the band's single 'You Look So Fine'. He played a man washed up on a seashore, then rescued by Manson.

Mixed Media[edit]

Slater played the recurring character Jimmy Slade on twenty-seven episodes of the popular TV show Baywatch in the early 1990s.^[16] He appeared in an episode of the reality show The Girls Next Door, and has starred in many surf films during his career.

In the late 1990s Slater, with friends and fellow pro surfers Rob Machado and Peter King, formed a band called The Surfers. The trio released an album in 1998 titled Songs from the Pipe, a reference to the famous surf spot Pipeline on Oahu, Hawaii. Slater toured Australia with his band, performing in venues such as the Opera House and parliament house. He was given an honorary membership to the Rickson Cricket Club in northwest Sydney.

Environmentalism & Philanthropy[edit]

Slater is an advocate of a sustainable and clean living lifestyle.,^[18] Slater is also a fundraiser and spokesperson for suicide prevention awareness. He has surfed in celebrity events for Surfers Against Suicide, telling sports website 'Athletes Talk': 'I've lost a couple of friends myself to suicide and it's just a horrible thing that can be prevented. People get in this dark place and they don't know what to do so it's always nice to see a non-profit that isn't turning into anything else other than just trying to help people.'^[19]

Slater is passionate about preserving oceans globally and protecting temperate reefs in California through his relationship with Reef Check.

On May 8, 2010 the United States House of Representatives honored Slater in H. Res. 792 for his 'outstanding and unprecedented achievements in the world of surfing and for being an ambassador of the sport and excellent role model.'^[20] This resolution, sponsored by Florida representative Bill Posey and sponsored by 10 representatives, passed without objection by a voice vote.^[21]

Slater is on the Board of Advisors (the Ocean Advocacy Advisory Board) of ocean conservation organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.^[22]

Professional Development[edit]

He historically and exclusively rode Channel Islands Surfboards equipped with his own signature series of FCS fin masons. As the media hype grew around Slater's lack of board stickers in 2015, Slater had been seen riding unlabelled Firewire surfboards, acquiring the company in 2014.^[23] In 2016 Slater released his own line of boards. As of August 2017 there are four Slater Designs models in the Firewire range: the Gamma, Cymatic, Omni & Sci-fi.

Since 1990, Slater had been sponsored primarily by surfwear industry giant Quiksilver until his recent departure on April 1, 2014 to collaborate with fashion brand conglomerate Kering.^[24] In a statement released on his social media accounts, Slater states 'For years I've dreamt of developing a brand that combines my love of clean living, responsibility and style. The inspiration for this brand comes from the people and cultures I encounter in my constant global travels and this is my opportunity to build something the way I have always wanted to.'^[25] After Leaving Quiksilver, Slater, in collaboration with Kering, established the eco-friendly and sustainable apparel company 'Outerknown', further building on his passion for the environment and sustainability.

Slater also established the beverage company Purps, and became a brand ambassador for The Chia Co.

Wave Pool Innovation[edit]

Arguably Slater's greatest entrepreneurial achievement was the unveiling of Slater's Wave Pool, a ten-year 'experiment' to create the perfect inland wave, situated in inland California. The project was a success and the surfing world was abuzz with the possibilities, mostly due to the wave's perfect shape and speed. In 2016 the World Surf League acquired a majority stake in the Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC) for an undisclosed sum. The WSL held a test event for 300 or more, including Filipe Toledo, Mick Fanning, Kanoa Igarashi, Gabriel Medina and others, at the Kelly Slater Surf Ranch on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. The Surf Ranch also hosted the WSL Founders Cup on May 5–6, 2018. The contest featured five teams - USA, Brazil, Australia, Europe and World - made up of men's and women's surfers from the WSL Championship Tour.

There is speculation he is developing Surf Ranch Florida, a man-made surfing lake in Palm Beach County. County commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved plans for the county to evaluate the proposed surf facility in 2017. Brian Waxman, project leader for Surf Ranch Florida, said the World Surf League is considering bringing the wave lake to the Sunshine State for its weather and heritage of world-class surfers. It would encompass an 80-acre industrial lot east of Jupiter Farms, near the Pine Glades natural area.^[26]

Competitive Achievements[edit]

Slater has been crowned World Surf League Champion a record 11 times, including five consecutive titles in 1994–98.^[27] He is the youngest (at age 20) and the oldest (at age 39) to win the WSL men's title. Upon winning his fifth world title in 1997, Slater passed Australian surfer Mark Richards to become the most successful champion in the history of the sport. In 2007 he also became the all-time leader in career event wins by winning the Boost Mobile Pro event at Lower Trestles near San Clemente, California. The previous record was held by Slater's childhood hero, three-time world champion Tom Curren.^[28] After earlier being awarded the title prematurely as a result of a miscalculation by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), on November 6, 2011 Slater officially won his eleventh ASP world title at the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, by winning his 4th round heat.

In May 2005, in the final heat of the Billabong Tahiti Pro contest at Teahupo'o, Slater became the first surfer ever to be awarded two perfect scores for a total 20 out of 20 points under the ASP two-wave scoring system (the corresponding honor under the previous three-wave system belongs to fellow American Shane Beschen who achieved the feat in 1996).

He did it again in June 2013 at the quarter finals at the Volcom Fiji Pro with two perfect ten waves, only the fourth person in history to do so.^[29]

Players guide World Professional Surfing Champion Kelly Slater across some of the best waves that the beaches of the world have to offer in this release for the PlayStation 2 console. Slater is joined by Lisa Andersen, Tom Carroll, Donavon Frankenreiter, and several other professional surfers of international renown in this never-ending quest for the perfect ride on the perfect wave.

In terms of gameplay and style, this title falls in line with similarly themed Activision releases like Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX and the category-founding Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, featuring real-world brand names, an intuitive interface, a suitably alternative soundtrack, and a large catalog of unbelievable tricks and combos. Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer was developed by the Interactive Republic Corporation and uses a new proprietary engine to create realistic, dynamic virtual waves for the pro boarders.

Adding to the list of sports in Activision O2's portfolio of extreme sports made into games is surfing. Again following the release of their console equivalents is this, the PC version of Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer. Like Matt Hoffman and Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater is apparently a god when it comes to surfing, although I really wouldn't know. Not to worry though if you don't know anything about surfing either as Pro Surfer is a really accessible game that I would even go so far as to say educates the gamer about surfing.

Right after booting the game up, the gamer will be treated to quite a long video introducing you to Kelly Slater and the world of surfing. At the beginning of each location that you surf, you will be shown a video of the history of the location in the surfing world, and the impact and contribution that that location has made. This gives the game a nice feel of peeking into the world of surfers and learning more about the lifestyle and the locations in the game. This is definitely very interesting for surfers and non surfers alike.

The gameplay mechanics are quite similar to the other O2 extreme sports games: Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX, Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder, and of course the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. There is one button to jump off the top of the wave, another button to slide your board, a grab button, and a carve button. Each of these buttons also has a secondary function in different given situations. Using each of these buttons in different combinations, the player is able to perform various tricks on the face of the wave, and in the air when doing aerial tricks.

For those of you familiar with the other O2 games, you will immediately recognize the style of the game as there is the ability to link tricks and maximize your special meter which will allow you to perform more complicated, cooler tricks. Most gamers will probably want to take a quick run through the tutorial which explains everything as this game has a few nuances and is not just Tony Hawk on water.

One problem that the gameplay suffers from is the simplicity of the moves. Most moves can simply be executed by double tapping one of the buttons or by holding a button. By quickly mashing on the buttons, it is very easy to max out your special meter. At this point it is possible to perform a special move. The only problem is that the special moves are also very easy to perform. Overall, this leaves a fairly simple and unchallenging level of gameplay. Also, many of the moves appear very similar and the excitement garnered by mixing many different looking tricks is not there.

The greatest challenge is in landing the aerial tricks as the greatest points are awarded for landing a perfect trick. The direction of landing is what is critical here as landing a perfect trick requires the player to land at a perfect 180 degrees to their angle of takeoff. The only problem is that the angle of takeoff is very difficult to determine, and after a few spins in the air, which also adds points to the trick, it is very difficult to determine what angle at which to land in order not to fall, let alone land a perfect trick. This is primarily due to the water graphics. As good as the water effects are there are no markers so that you can tell in which direction the momentum of your character is traveling. This appears to be more of a design flaw than a viable challenge as it makes landing a decent trick very difficult not through the mechanics of the game but through a problem that will likely be experienced by most gamers.

One cool thing that can be done in the game is the ability to ride tubes. This means that as a surfer, you can ride within the crest of the wave. At this point a balance meter is displayed on screen and to maintain your position in the tube you must balance the joypad from left to right much like a grind in the Tony Hawk games. Apart from this little part of the game, there isn't a whole lot of variation in the types of things that you can do.

The layout of the game is very similar to the other O2 titles. There is a two player mode, a career mode, and single player challenge and practice mode. All the extra videos of locations and surfers that you have unlocked appear in an extras section that you can view at any time. The career mode is the real meat of the game and this is where the extra surfboards, improvement on surfer's skills and the more surf videos can be unlocked. The upgrades to your surfer's skills can not be chosen, but happen automatically when clearing a certain number of career objectives. The different surf boards that you affect your surfer's ability to perform in different ways. Some will be more built for speed while others will afford you a better carving ability.

The graphics here are really top notch with the water effects looking especially crisp. At the higher resolutions, the game is a true beauty to behold. As an added bonus as well, the system requirements really aren't that steep and even top systems from a few months ago should be fine at the higher resolutions. One piece of hardware to ensure that you have sprouting from your USB port is a gamepad as this will improve your level of enjoyment as it will afford you so much more control.

While in no way a serious contender of taking the crown of extreme sports games away from the Tony Hawk series, Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer offers an interesting look into the world of surfing. The gameplay is fairly solid, if a little elementary and repetitive, but does offer enough of a challenge in its specific career goals as to offer most gamers at least a little diversion from some of the more deserving holiday titles.
